Prescott National Forest is guardian of 100,000 acres of wilderness, including the beautiful Granite Mountain Wilderness - 20 minutes from Prescott. Explore the magnificent moonscape vistas of the Granite Dells to the top of majestic Granite Mountain and across the pine-draped Bradshaw Mountains. You can also enjoy scenic hiking trails and excellent trout fishing at Lynx Lake Recreational Area.While there are numerous trails to choose from, here are a few of our favorites
- Thumb Butte-Trail 33. Located 3 miles west of downtown Prescott, this Prescott, Arizona landmark is one of the most popular hiking trails. The moderate 1.75-mile loop trail is paved and a bit steep at the start, but the views from the top are worth it.
- Groom Creek Loop-Trail 384. With little elevation gain (500 feet), this 6-mile loop trail is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. Maverick Mountain and Mt. Tritle provide a beautiful backdrop to this trail, which winds through lush vegetation along the Hassayampa River's upper basin.
Prescott Peavine Trail. The "Rails to Trials" project formed this winding 9.2-mile trail that was once the route for the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix railroad. This spectacular hiking, biking and equestrian trail covers the most beautiful scenery in Yavapai County, meandering through lush riparian areas, the beautiful Granite Dells, above Watson Lake, and towards open rangelands.- Little Granite Mountain-Trail 37 To Granite Basin Lake. This beautiful 1.5-hour hiking, biking and horseback riding trail provides spectacular panoramic views of Skull Valley, Prescott, Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Sierra Prietas.
